GUEST COUNTRY DENMARK
Measured against its population of almost 5.8 million inhabitants, the Kingdom of Denmark is one of the most successful film nations in the world. For several years, namely between 1909 and 1916, the Danish production company "Nordisk Film" even dominated the world market, producing over 100 silent films annually, until the studios in Babelsberg and Hollywood knocked it off its top spot. Copenhagen's "Nordisk Film" with its characteristic signet - a polar bear atop a globe- is still active today, as the oldest existing film production company. It experienced a second heyday during the 1950s, when the legendary Erik Balling directed many great films there, including those with the Olsen gang, and ultimately took over the management of the studio. An effective, public film promotion system and a brilliant production and marketing strategy such as DOGMA 95 by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg brought about a lot of artistic and commercial success both at home and abroad.
Denmark is the featured guest country at the FILMKUNSTFEST MV for the very first time. The films featuring the Olsen gang, particularly popular amongst East German audiences, are obvious choices, with four examples chosen by the readers of the Schweriner Volkszeitung being screened. Naturally, the current world of film-making is represented inall its facets in our programme.
Today's Danish cinema easily transforms historical as well as brandnewsocial topics into exciting dramas for the silver screen. In case of LAND OF MINE, it has even triggered a societal discussion. What else could people expect from cinema?

GUEST OF HONOUR: BELGIUM
"Well, they've got a very particular type of humour in Belgium. Very gruff sometimes, but also very direct!" These are the words of the great Catherine Deneuve, who recently had to share a bed with a gorilla in the highly successful Belgian film, THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT, which attracted an audience of 370,000 in Germany.
The best example of this humour in our section on Belgium can be seen in the turbulent road movie, I AM DEAD,BUT I HAVE FRIENDS. The ageing rock band, "Grand Ours"(Big Bear), is about to leave on an extravagant revival tour in the USA, when the band leader tragically dies. And so the others travel around with the ashes in their bag. The popular Flemish comedian and character actor, Bouli Lanners, shines once more as the grouchy rocker; he also plays a leading rolein two of our other films, in the family drama, ALL CATS ARE GREY, and the quirky but beautiful end-of-time western, THE FIRST, THE LAST, which Lanners also directed.
Also featuring in the programme is BELGICA, the new film from Felix van Groeningen, who moved us to tears with the grandiose THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN in 2013, as well as the feature-length film debut of young directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, set in the Brussels area of Molenbeek, followed by a discussion. In total, this section is made up of 18 outstanding, contemporary short and feature-length films from both French-speaking Wallonia and Flemishspeaking Flanders, as well as the 1919 film, THE OYSTER PRINCESS, a rousing film concert by the Flemish jazzband, FLAT EARTH SOCIETY, not to mention a display of drawings from renowned Belgian comic book author, Judith Vanistendael, from her new graphic novel MIKEL.
We would like to extend our thanks to the embassy of the Kingdomof Belgium in Berlin, the Flanders region, the two film agencies, Wallonie Bruxelles Image and Flanders Image, the publishing house, Reprodukt, in Berlin and FreshEggsGallery in Marstall Schwerin for their magnificent support.

Belgica quickly becomes bigger and better. But everything has its price in the end.
